Radeon HD 4850 versus
GeForce GT 130
Posted Monday, April 27th, 2009, by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist
As of this writing, we are still waiting for our 'early 2009' iMac 3.06 with Radeon HD 4850 to arrive even though it was ordered on March 5th. We know you are dying to see the 4850 GPU compared to the GeForce 130 GT and other iMac GPUs. We are too. We can offer you some results that were sent to us by "remote mad scientists" who did receive their 4850 equipped iMac.
GRAPH LEGEND
iMac G130 = early 2009 iMac 3.06GHz with GeForce 130 GT
iMac R4850 = early 2009 iMac 2.93GHz with Radeon HD 4850
MP R4870 = early 2009 Mac Pro 2.93GHz with Radeon HD 4870
WORTH THE $50
If these limited examples are any indication, those who paid $50 for the optional Radeon HD 4850 will feel vindicated.
As for the reports of iMacs with 4850s freezing, there is a thread in the MacRumors forum that tries to be constructive rather than a flame fest. Some members feel they have narrowed it down to a WiFi disfunction (or conflict). One reader overcame the freezing issue by disabling WiFi and enabling Fan Control. I suggest you read carefully through the thread and draw your own conclusions. As for us, we will report any definitive cause or fix once we are convinced there is such.
