APRIL FOOLS!

April 1st, 2007, by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist

I love a good April Fools joke. The Anthro folks, developers of the AnthroCart, Elevate, and other ergonomic office furniture, developed a new product called the AntroBunk just to promote their April Fools Sale. They say it's "perfect for pulling all-nighters."

Some Mac related April Fools jokes are unintentional. Like the Apple TV with support for HD movies -- but with no HD movies available on the iTunes Store! Fortunately, there are utilities like HandBrake that can convert your DVD movies into MPEG-4 so they can be played on your Apple TV.

Or how about the iPhone that millions are going to buy this June without 3G support?

The original Apple April Fools joke was when they shipped the first Mac in 1984 without an internal hard drive. You could choose either a floppy drive or a floppy drive or both. Thankfully third parties quickly created some external hard drive options.

Other current April Fools 'jokes' include the fact that even if Photoshop CS3 final release was shipping today, it still can't created a memory cache larger than 3.5GB. That's due to the fact that
a) it is still a 32 bit application, and
b) the OS X "pick up the slack and use more than 3GB of RAM for caching" feature must be disabled due to a pausing bug in OS X "Tiger."

An Adobe official was quoted saying, "The current plan is to enable VM buffering for big RAM machines running Leopard and disable it for Tiger. But we'll provide an "enable VM buffering" plugin to override this on Tiger if you don't mind the Tiger pause (couldn't resist)."

How about the design of that ExpressCard/34 slot on the MacBook Pro? How many of you noticed that the card ejects itself at the worst possible time? I understand that there is way to implement that slot so that the card only ejects if you want it to. Hopefully Apple will fix that when the next version of the MacBook Pro comes out.

I could go on documenting the many "tricks" Apple has played on us loyal consumers. You can consult my "Missing Pieces" page for more. I hope the rumors of an eight core Mac Pro announcement at NAB are true. And I hope the add SLI support for the graphics cars.

Happy April Fools!
